Are Celebrities Easy Targets? Jung Hyung-don Reveals Reason Behind His Anxiety Disorder
On the Sep 26th broadcast of Channel A's "Dr. Oh's Golden Clinic", the last customers were Jung Hyung-don and Park Sung-kwang.
On the show, Jung Hyung-don, who started his social life at the age of 17, shared, "Life isn't fun. I'm like a sailboat drifting wherever the wind blows."
He also talked about some shocking and dangerous incidents he experienced as a celebrity. He recalled, "I was wearing a hoodie and running because I was late for an appointment. Suddenly, someone recognized me, shouted 'It's Jung Hyung-don!' and pulled on my hoodie from behind, causing me to fall backward on the street in Nampo-dong." He added, "When my daughter was less than a year old, I brought her to a friend's wedding. An older lady suddenly took my baby, saying, 'Oh, is this your child?' These kinds of incidents happened repeatedly."
Dr. Oh Eun-young commented, "Jung Hyung-don's original personality is very bright, cheerful and sociable. He became incredibly famous through the national program 'Infinite Challenge', reaching the peak of his career. But with fame also came challenges, as is often the case."
Jung Hyung-don, who has been suffering from anxiety disorder for about 20 years, experienced a career peak with "Infinite Challenge", but ultimately had to halt his activities. He felt a lot of self-blame as a result, saying, "I collapsed during the prime of my broadcasting career, a time that only comes once. For a while, I blamed myself, thinking, 'Other people manage to get through it, so why was I born so weak?' I even started questioning, 'Do I really have anxiety?' I began to wonder if I was just creating it myself because it's something you can't see anyway."
Feeling a great sense of responsibility after the birth of his twin daughters, Jung Hyung-don confessed, "I told myself I would give them everything good, even though they couldn't even walk yet. From then on, I recorded two shows a day, traveled overseas for new programs, and upon returning in the morning, would immediately start another two recordings. I filmed 106 episodes in three months, taking only two days off during that time. I remember when I came home after 10 days of filming and my daughters, who weren't yet two years old, backed away and ran from me. There was no time to feel sad about it. In 2015, everything fell apart."
Dr. Oh Eun-young explained, "The core of your anxiety stems from your sense of responsibility as the head of your family, particularly the financial responsibility. It's not the amount of money that matters, but the symbolic burden of supporting your family and raising your children well until they grow up."
She further analyzed, "The anxiety you're feeling doesn't come from weakness but from responsibility. It's the worry of 'What if I can't fulfill my duties?' that brings about the anxiety. Living with this sense of responsibility isn't inherently bad, but to become more stable, you have to continue your work, even though public attention and being in crowded places feel overwhelming. This is the dilemma you're facing."
