Park Chan-wook Wins Highest Prize at Seoul International Drama Awards 2024 for “The Sympathizer”
The prestigious award ceremony 2024 Seoul International Drama, held at the KBS Hall on the afternoon of September 25th, saw an impressive turnout of global talent.
Among the attendees were 13 international directors and producers, including Golden Bird Award winner Park Chan-wook and International Competition Grand Prize recipient Pedro Peregrino.
Notable writers such as David Benioff of "3 Body Problem" were also present, alongside 10 actors including Hoa Xuande, Song Kang-ho, Yeom Hye-ran, and Ahn Jae-hong. The drama OST award winners, Seventeen’s BSS, rounded out the star-studded guest list.
As the ceremony reached its pinnacle, Director Park Chan-wook accepted the Golden Bird Prize, which was the highest prize of the ceremony, and reflected, "The child within me has always dreamed of television dramas."
Expressing gratitude for his win with "The Sympathizer," he added, "No one can tell us how our drama of life will end, but just as it's more fun to watch a drama without knowing the ending, let's live our lives savoring each moment."
The stage also welcomed Director Pedro Peregrino, winner of the Grand Prize in the International Competition category for "Justice: Misconduct," along with director Derek Tsang and writer David Benioff, who claimed the Best Miniseries and Best Writer awards respectively for "3 Body Problem."
The audience erupted in applause as actors representing the year's best performances delivered their acceptance speeches. Song Kang-ho, awarded Best Actor in the International Competition category for "Uncle Samsik," shared, "Having worked in films, I'm deeply moved and overwhelmed to be working on a drama. I feel a heavy sense of responsibility. I hope 'Uncle Samsik' will be remembered for a long time as a drama that shows the potential to take a step further in the diversity of content and the horizon of dramas."
Yeom Hye-ran and Ahn Jae-hong, who swept the Best Actor and Actress awards in the Outstanding K-Drama category for "Mask Girl," also left a lasting impression with their heartfelt messages.
Kim Hye-yoon, recipient of the "Asia Stars Award" through global K-drama fan votes, expressed her gratitude:,"I was able to receive this award thanks to the many people who voted for me, to the viewers who supported the drama. I will become an actress who can show you various acts in the future."
SEVENTEEN BSS, the OST award winners, also took the stage to deliver their acceptance speech, much to the delight of their fans.
Some winners, unable to attend in person, sent impactful video messages. Iržina Bohdalová, who won Best Actress in the International Competition category, said, "This award has given me hope and renewed energy for my work and life."
Actor Byun Woo-seok, absent due to prior commitments, stated, "I made many memories with fans through 'Lovely Runner' I will consider this award as one I received together with the fans."
Bang Moon-shin, Chairman of the Seoul Drama Awards Organizing Committee, expressed his gratitude to all award winners, saying, "The power of drama is truly amazing. Seeing everyone come together to cheer on dramas from all over the world, I am amazed at the fact that drama brings the whole world together, transcending language and borders. I hope that we can create more dramas that can resonate with people all over the world."
Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Yoo In-chon and Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon also served as presenters, offering words of encouragement to the award winners.
The ceremony, hosted by announcer Bae Sung-jae and actress Seol In-ah, was preceded by a glamorous "Purple Carpet" event from 3:30 PM, attended by award winners and presenters.
Following the awards ceremony, the 2024 Seoul International Drama Awards, sponsored by various cultural and media organizations, will host a two-day "Seoul Drama Festa" at the Banpo Hangang Park starting from the 26th.
