The Relationship Between BTS and NewJeans

On September 14, @bowwow_bam, the social media account dedicated to Jungkook's (BTS) dog Bam with 6 million followers, unexpectedly posted a picture of Bam along with the caption “Artists are not guilty,” accompanied by five colored heart emojis.

Coincidentally, these five colored heart emojis are frequently used by the group NewJeans. As a result, many speculated that Jungkook was showing support for NewJeans. This led netizens to revisit the relationship between BTS and NewJeans.

NewJeans’ "Mother", Min Hee Jin, Accused of Taking Advantage of BTS's Fame

Previously, NewJeans was rumored to have a strained relationship with BTS after Min Hee Jin dragged BTS into her tense conflict with HYBE. Specifically, media reports revealed that Min Hee Jin had told external partners, “Bang Si Hyuk copied me to create BTS.” This statement angered BTS's fan community.

Many expressed outrage, with some even accusing Min Hee Jin of being "delusional" for claiming that BTS's success was due to Bang Si Hyuk copying her. At the time of BTS’s debut, Min Hee Jin was still the creative director at SM Entertainment. It is hard to find similarities between BTS’s early hip-hop concept and the boy groups Min Hee Jin had worked on at SM, such as SHINee or EXO. ARMY members continuously provided comparison images to prove that Min Hee Jin's statement about the global boy group was baseless.

Since BTS had been uninvolved in the conflict, being directly mentioned in this controversy while members are serving in the military made the fandom extremely upset. Previously, Min Hee Jin had sparked controversy by criticizing ILLIT and HYBE, not wanting the new girl group from BELIFT LAB to be promoted under the label “little sister of NewJeans,” while NewJeans was frequently referred to by the media as "BTS’s little sister" during their debut. People pointed out that without this label, it would have been difficult for NewJeans to gain fame and success as quickly as they did.

At that time, it was common to see the term "BTS’s little sister" used in media discussions about NewJeans. The relationship between NewJeans and BTS is similar to ILLIT's situation, as both are artists under the HYBE umbrella but managed by different subsidiaries.

Netizens are familiar with the "BTS’s little sister" label for NewJeans. However, while BTS is managed by Big Hit, NewJeans is under ADOR.

Before their official debut with NewJeans, the two oldest members, Hanni and Minji, were featured as supporting actors in BTS’s "Permission To Dance" MV. The senior-junior relationship between the two groups is often publicly demonstrated through TikTok videos during NewJeans’s comebacks.

NewJeans Secures Major Endorsement Deals Thanks to Being BTS's Juniors

Additionally, from the beginning, the five members of NewJeans have continuously received ambassador titles and appeared at major events for luxury brands. Observant netizens have noted that the group benefits from significant resources thanks to BTS.

Many ads and events that BTS had previously participated in have since been associated with NewJeans. Notable examples include roles as public ambassadors for Seoul City, New York Rocking Eve, and ads for McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, Line Friends, and Shinhan Bank.

The group’s valuable endorsement deals are believed to be a result of BTS’s influence.

The issue of NewJeans’ fashion ambassador titles has been controversial. The members were surprisingly named ambassadors for luxury brands despite having limited fame or brand exposure. This has led to rumors that NewJeans is receiving these titles as "BTS’s add-on."

Of the five members, three—Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein—are involved with brands like Celine, Dior, and Louis Vuitton, which were previously associated with V, Jimin, and J-Hope.

Additionally, when Jungkook was announced as the global ambassador for Calvin Klein, NewJeans was also revealed as the brand’s new models.

NewJeans Rumored to Replace BTS Amidst Korean Media Speculation

In 2023, South Korean media reports buzzed with speculation that the girl group NewJeans might "replace" BTS in the near future. This topic quickly garnered significant attention from fans, who believed these articles were suggesting that the Hybe rookie group would fill the void left by BTS.

Reports also highlighted that the stock price of Hybe rose by 23% thanks to NewJeans revitalizing the company's outlook. A source cited headlines such as: "Filling the void left by BTS, NewJeans breathes new life into Hybe's stock," "BTS leaves a gap? NewJeans sweeps the charts, proving their power," "Even with BTS's enlistment, why has Hybe's stock target risen by 23%?" "The next BTS turns out to be NewJeans, Hybe has found their best answer," and "NewJeans achieved in 6 months what BTS took 8 years to do."

BTS fans expressed frustration over the media's comparisons between NewJeans and BTS, criticizing the media for juxtaposing their statuses in the entertainment industry.

At that time, Korean netizens noticed a trend of articles that simultaneously mentioned both BTS and NewJeans, comparing the success of the two groups. On online forums, people pointed out that these articles tend to praise NewJeans for dominating the charts left open by BTS and emphasize how NewJeans helped to boost Hybe's stock value and financial success, especially as BTS members began their military service and the group was temporarily inactive.

Despite all controversies, BTS and NewJeans still remain good relationship

Following JungKook's seemingly supportive message for NewJeans, Big Hit Music explained that Jungkook’s post, which included the message “Artists are not guilty” through his pet’s SNS, was made with the belief that “under no circumstances should young artists be dragged into disputes or used as shields.”

This shows that Jungkook has affirmed the positive relationship between the two groups. Not only Jungkook, but another BTS member, V, has also publicly supported NewJeans.

V and NewJeans first interacted publicly when V appeared in a video joining the "Hype Boy" trend in August 2023. It can be said that NewJeans is an "exception" for V’s dance challenge. Among the groups in the same company, it's rare for male idols to interact with female juniors. V's collaboration with NewJeans on the "Hype Boy" dance challenge generated considerable buzz for a time.

Shortly afterward, V promoted his solo song "Slow Dancing," and NewJeans reciprocated by performing a dance challenge with V, which was posted on BTS's TikTok channel. Recently, on April 14, NewJeans visited V while he was in the military. Fans from both sides were surprised by the close relationship between V and NewJeans, which led to the visit during V's service.
